Rape Awareness Week

Various locations around campus
Rape Awareness Week brings people together to acknowledge and raise awareness about the issue of rape and sexual assault. Join us by participating in events throughout the month of September. Sponsored by the MSA/GPC Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention Center in collaboration with the Center for Social Justice, the MU Counseling Center, the MU Student Health Center and other campus entities.

Sexual Assault:  What You Need to Know

Men’s Candlelight Vigil

Speaker’s Circle
Men play a critical role in ending rape and sexual violence. Men function as allies, support systems, and survivors. All of these roles need to be explored and given voice. Come and join us in honoring these emerging voices and experiences in the battle to end sexual violence. Everyone is welcome. This event is organized by Men Against Relationship and Sexual Violence (MARS) and Stronger Together Against Relationship and Sexual Violence (STAR). Rain site is S304 Memorial Student Union.

Take Back the Night

Take Back the Night is a national movement created to raise awareness about violence against women in our society. At the rally, keynote speaker, Kelley Lucero, with The Shelter will share her story. Following this, we will march through campus raising awareness and visibility! To conclude the evening, there will be a Speak-Out to give survivors of rape and sexual assault a chance to speak out about their experiences. Join us as we shatter the silence to end the violence!

Rape Awareness Week Film Screening: “Speak Out and Stand Up: Raising Awareness about Sexual Assault"

 “Twilight” movie star Kristen Stewart hosts the film, “Speak Out and Stand Up: Raising Awareness about Sexual Assault." Join us as we watch this 20-minute video that explores sexual assault on a college campus. There will be a discussion following the film.

Stop Traffic’s Dance Marathon

The Dance Marathon is a fundraiser for Stop Traffic, an MU anti human trafficking organization and the Central Missouri Anti Human Trafficking Coalition to promote awareness and help fight modern day slavery and human trafficking.  The coalition is a multi-sector, community-based coalition made up of law enforcement officials, social service providers, university professionals, members of faith communities, students and others.  The dance marathon will be a social event that will allow attendees to dance the night away. Educational material will be available.

Kristen’s Story

"Kristin's Story" is a mother's tale of her daughter's rape and subsequent suicide. A vibrant 20-year-old, Kristin, committed suicide shortly after she was raped by a friend in 1995. Her mother, Andrea Cooper, now shares her daughter’s tragedy with college students across the country in order to educate and inspire others to get help. Sponsored by Alpha Chi Omega, Delta Delta Delta, the Wellness Resource Center, and the RSVP Center.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month has been observed for over 20 years. Its purpose is to bring people together to honor and acknowledge those harmed by violence. Shattering the Holy Hush: the Church’s Response to Domestic Abuse

Abuse is ugly. It is always wrong. When abuse strikes, many women and men look to their family community for help. This day long workshop will highlight ways to work with religious victims/survivors and discuss partnership models between churches and the communities that they serve. The training is intended for pastors and other religious leaders, members of congregations especially interested in domestic violence, and professionals in the community who are sometimes called upon to work with highly religious clients. RAD is a women’s only self-defense class which combines classroom, physical techniques, and simulation portions to enhance the student’s ability to defend themselves if attacked. Clothesline Project

The Clothesline Project is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by creating t-shirts.  The t-shirts are then hung on a clothesline to be viewed by others as a testimony to the prevalence of violence against women. Come participate in this powerful demonstration. This event, co-sponsored by the Shelter, includes a display of shirts created over the past several years.

MU Council on Violence Against Women Kick Off Meeting

The Survivor Chronicles:  Discussion on Victims of Rape as part of the Genocide in Rwanda

Join us to hear the experiences of Dr. Raeona Nichols from the MU Counseling Center, Dr. Deb Doxsee, a psychologist, and Health Educator Kim Webb from the Student Health Center in their work with survivors of rape in Rwanda and the effects of these war crimes on family and community. Lunch will be provided.

Vagina Monologues Informational Session

Be a part of organizing the 9th Annual Performance of MU‘s Vagina Monologues! V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. We need motivated women to help with logistics, marketing, and performance. This informational session will provide details on the process of the Vagina Monologues organizing, including cast and committee selection. No experience necessary, only a passion for ending violence against women and working for social justice. Come be a part of it!
 
Voices Documentary

“Voices” is a documentary featuring stories of survivors of relationship and sexual violence. The documentary was a collaborative effort between the Stephens College film department and the Shelter. Be a part of the 9th Annual MU Vagina Monologues production! We are looking for a diverse cast with a passion for ending violence against women. Acting experience is NOT necessary. Everyone gets a part! To be on cast, you must: audition, show up to all rehearsals, and participate on an organizing committee. Please come to the audition with a copy of a monologue. You can check out scripts at the Women‘s Center (N214 Memorial Union). You do not need to memorize your piece.

MSA/GPC Relationship and Sexual Violence Prevention (RSVP) Center
The RSVP Center is an educational resource and support service for the campus. Staff provide outreach which can be tailored toward specific concerns such as date rape, psychological aspects of sexual assault, rape as a men’s issue, rape and sexual assault in specific communities, intimate partner violence and stalking. The Center provides support and referrals for survivors of sexual and relationship violence and stalking. RSVP, located in the Center for Social Justice, maintains a resource library on sexual and relationship violence issues. Stronger Together Against Relationship and Sexual Violence (STAR)
STAR is a student organization that raises awareness about relationship and sexual violence. In conjunction with MARS, STAR and MARS reach out to the MU campus through educational programming and events. Men Against Relationship and Sexual Violence (MARS)
MARS is a group of campus & community men exploring their role in ending relationship & sexual violence. This group works closely with STAR to organize events as well as holding weekly discussions.
