Language Partners Program:
The MU Women’s Center Language Partners Program pairs one native English speaking student with one non-native English speaker student, scholar, or family member. The pairs get together once a week for a minimum of one hour and practice conversational English. The program is a great opportunity to learn about another culture and make a new friend. The focus of the program is to assist the non-native English speaker with their conversational English, awareness of American culture, and knowledge of living in Columbia, Missouri.

The program benefits both participants. There is great intrinsic value in having a friend from another country and culture. Past participants have a lot to say about the program:
"Because of this program I have decided to teach in Asia when I graduate in May."
"I just wanted to say thank you for organizing the language partner program. I really enjoyed the experience and spending time with my language partner was so much fun. I will be studying abroad next year, but definitely want to continue this program when I return."
"We've really become friends...I even had a Christmas party at my house in St. Louis for him and his girlfriend!"
"I liked this program because it is a good opportunity to get to know American students. It is not easy for an international graduate student to be acquainted with American students outside of the department."
"I loved the fact that I could be involved in the program. It was so easy to do."
"I really liked meeting someone from a different culture and explaining to them our culture. It is also funny to see all the things that I take for granted such as carving pumpkins and how weird those traditions really seem!"
